I am a writer and theorist on sport and education. A former teacher in both Primary and Secondary Schools and a teacher trainer, I have been a Professor at Canterbury, Roehampton and most recently Birmingham Universities.
I have studied Physical Education, Philosophy and Evolutionary
Anthropology, and continue to work in these areas. My focus is on
their relevance for learning, knowledge and the development of
expertise.
I have worked with UNESCO as Expert Adviser, the World Health
Organisation, Sports Coach UK and many other similar groups, and have
carried out research on behalf of the UK government, numerous sports
and educational agencies.
Examples of my recent work include the following:
The first (and only) Systematic Review of Gifted and Talented Education, carried out on behalf of the English Government's Department for Children, Schools and Families.
The most comprehensive review ever published on the Benefits of Physical Education and Sport.
A widely cited report on disaffection and truancy in schools, on behalf of the Economic and Social Research Council.
Co-authorship of the Quality Standards for Talent Development for Physical Education, on behalf of the Youth Sport Trust, distributed to all English Schools.
Advising and supporting the development of the Agency for Cooperation in Secondary Education and Project Agency Cooperation Education (PACE),
aimed at fostering the potential of education in post-conflict
societies, with partners throughout the Adriatic region (in Italy,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro).
Research, consultancy and media appearances for Unilever's (Persil)
'Be My Coach' campaign, with Dame Kelly Holmes and Steven Gerrard.
I've written more than 100 publications, including books, academic
and professional articles and journalism. I have been frequently
invited to speak at events focused on education, sport and related
topics, and have spoken at conferences in every continent of the world.
I have appeared on BBC 1, Channel 4, BBC Radio 4, Five Live, Radio
Europe, and many other television and radio stations. My personal
highlight was an extended interview on the the BBC's Today programme
with John Humphrey's, which was as scary as it seems! My work has been
reported in the Guardian, the Times (London), Times Educational Supplement, TES Cymru, Manchester Evening News, Daily Mail and many other newspapers.
In an earlier life, I was a successful competitive martial artist. I competed in Karate and Thai Boxing at a high level: I won Bronze Medal in the IBF European Karate Championships, and a few years later was rated No.1 in the UK by the World Kickboxing Federation. I still teach for time to time, and train at a professional boxing gym in Birmingham.
"Richard Bailey is a motivational speaker who provides intellectual stimulation to an audience interested in talent, sport achievement and education. He engages well with wide spectrum of professionals, learners and parents / carers. Professor Bailey has a passion for his work and for the aspirations and education of children and young people. His presentations are humorous, inspirational, challenging and well-planned, and are invariably well-received. It is a pleasure to work with Professor Bailey, who is always reliable and professional."
(Sue Soan, Principal Lecturer, Author and Editor)
Richard Bailey is one of the very few leaders in the field who can capture the hearts and minds of teachers wanting to make a difference to the lives of children sport and PE. A consumate professional as a speaker, writer and CPD deliverer, Richard really does lead the way. (Dr David Morley, Director of Education, Education and Special Projects Ltd.)
"Richard delivered precisely what was needed as he captivated, stimulated and challenged the audience of academics, ministers of education, specialists and student representatives from 16 countries. His was a memorable performance." (Sandy Thomas, Education Director of the PACE Project (2007-8); Deputy Head of the United World College of the Adriatic.)
"Richard Bailey ... a man whose C.V. of research books and publications is impressively extensive to say the least. I really enjoy listening to Richard speak ... You feel that you are listening to a man who has been there and actually walked the walk and developed his ideas from practical experience. It is refreshing to listen to an academic mind that is not so far removed from the reality of the teaching and learning process that their ideas become obscurely ideological. I also like his style of delivery punctuated with anecdotes and humour. If you ever get the chance to hear Richard speak I would thoroughly recommend it." (Ian Stainger, Development Officer, Learning and Teaching Scotland)
