Profile Summary
Expertise in helping individuals and teams in sports and business perform under pressure.
I'm a director of Performance1, developing high performance in business and sport. My particular expertise lies in developing mental toughness and building excellence within teams, skills which were essential in my role as sport psychologist with Team GB at the Macau preparation camp for the Beijing Olympics.
Clients include UK Sport, the GB canoe slalom and sprint teams, the GB U18 & U23 Rowing Teams, Badminton England, The British Real Tennis Academy, and a range of individual clients from diverse sports including tennis, sailing and premiership football. I was a facilitator on the British Olympic Association's Team Leader Programme for Athens 2004, working with Performance Directors in developing strategies to handle media pressures and team challenges in the forthcoming games.
My corporate work has included co-facilitating for NHS Chief Executives’ on personal and professional resourcefulness in a pressured environment; supporting the board and Senior Management team of Mercury Health during their rapid growth; and teaching co-coaching skills to civil servants in the Cabinet Office to enhance their creativity and provide a more supportive working environment. Facilitating a recent strategy event for 55 senior and regional staff within the Environment Agency, delegates later fed back that they were 'shocked at the level of excitement, engagement and enthusiasm' generated.

All of my work helps individuals and teams find the extra 1 percent that makes a difference to performance. 1 percent is the difference between Gold and 4th - off the podium. Gaining 1 percent in all areas, training, in the gym, in rehab, with your coach, with your team mates, with other staff, on a regular basis leads to enormous gains in performance. Continususly developing better relationships, better focus, and increased confidence takes you to new levels and greater enjoyment, in sport and in business.

"Canoeing in the UK is a successful Olympic Sport with our athletes winning 5 medals at the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. The World of High Performance Sport is fast moving and the process of change is continuous as we seek the competitive edge on the opposition. The support given to our athletes and coaches by Hugh Mantle and William Winstone is World Class in every respect as we work together to our mutual goals for medal success in Beijing"
John Anderson MBE
Performance Director
The Self Aware Sport Psychologist - 2007 & 2008
“Excellent facilitators – insightful, articulate, very respectful and non-directive. Excellent role modelling of self awareness.” “Good to be challenged to think about the work we do from a different perspective”
Performance Under Pressure - Seminars 2008
“Some really positive mental exercises for taking proven elite sport techniques into the business world”
"Made me reflect more and think holistically (work and home)"
"In terms of results, I think one of the most telling things is the number of friends and other work colleagues I have spoken to about the day. They now expect to see the new mellow me so that puts me under even more pressure!"
A few weeks later......
"Yes I can honestly say my behaviour has changed. There have been a couple of potential eruption points in both business and personal arenas and on both occasions I reacted with a surprising calm. Of course the huge upside was that both issues were accordingly resolved much more smoothly."
“A completely new view / insight to performing under pressure”
BUCS Psychology Presentation 2009
"Many thanks for forwarding the slides of yesterday’s presentation to me. I found the session one of the most interesting that I have attended for a very long time and I shall certainly follow it up with some further reading." Colin Hughes BUCS Rowing Coach
